Nothing Matters

When was the last time you scheduled time to do nothing?

Sounds silly doesn’t it? But, think about it, when do you come up with your best ideas? Usually when you have time to think, right? Well… when do you have time to think?

Have you ever heard someone say they do their best thinking in the shower? My greatest ideas come to me there. In fact, the idea for this article came to me while showering. Does soap scum make people smarter? Maybe it’s the hot water and steam that brings us clarity. Let’s be realistic and really think about it.

Taking a shower is uninterrupted time. How can you possibly think well if you are constantly interrupted? Daily interruptions include a phone that constantly rings, emails that never stop, and co-workers that continuously pop in. When you get home it doesn’t change - you may have children and a family that needs you too. With a life like yours, you will never get uninterrupted time.

Obviously it isn’t healthy to take 20 showers a day, not to mention it isn’t very economical, so you need to find other means to find that uninterrupted time. This means you may need to make some changes. There are several ways to steal some quiet time without having to schedule it:

Don’t talk on your cell phone in your car
Not only is this a safer way to drive, but now you have time to be alone with your thoughts.

Pick the longest line at the supermarket
Standing in line forces you to do nothing. Enjoy this time and think. Don’t make any phone calls and if necessary leave your phone at home. Bring a pad of paper with you everywhere you go to write down your thoughts when you are stuck waiting. Waiting could wind up being a blessing instead of a curse.

Eat lunch alone
I know many of you networkers out there think you should never eat alone. But this is quality time. Most of us get an hour for lunch. Take advantage and use this time to remove yourself from your office and free your mind. Don’t forget that pad of paper and do forget your phone.

Take a quick walk
It doesn’t need to be a power walk and you don’t even need a destination. Just escape for 15 minutes. I promise all your work will be waiting for you when you return. Fresh air and a mental break can help clear your mind for new, brilliant ideas.

If all else fails, schedule it
Put it into your daily or weekly calendar as TIME FOR ME!

There are so many ways to squeeze in some time to think. If you have suggestions that work well for you, please send them to newsletter@2d9.net. I would love to share your thoughts with others and post it on our website.
